Emergencies and Crises

In an emergency or life-threatening situation, please call 911.

When Student Health and Wellness is closed and you need to speak with someone regarding an urgent question or concern, care providers are always on call through the answering service number at 434-297-4261. Let the provider know if you have a medical concern or wish to speak to a mental health care provider. Please wait near a phone for a response.

If you have an urgent medical or emotional problem, or are so directed by the on-call provider, you may receive care at the Uva Hospital Emergency Room.  Student Health does not cover visits or charges incurred in the emergency room; they are billed directly to your insurance.

All UVA students are eligible for emergency assessments and/or consultation through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). During business hours students can walk-in or call CAPS at 434-243-5150 for an Emergency Consultation Appointment. Afterhours students should call 434-243-5150 and ask to speak with a CAPS counselor.

If you are concerned about a UVA student, you can call (434) 243-5150 24 hours/day, 7 days/week and ask to speak with the CAPS Emergency Consult Clinician. Consultation regarding students is available to UVA students, faculty, administrators, staff, parents and other concerned community members.

If you have experienced an unwanted sexual encounter or a sexual assault and need medical and emotional assistance, please go here. The Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA), a non-profit agency in Charlottesville, also offers emergency services and information, 24 hours a day and can be reached at (434) 977-7273.

You can also find additional information on University sexual violence education and resources here.
