Art Room

The Art Room fosters healing and self-discovery through the transformative power of artistic expression. It is a safe and inclusive space where students, regardless of background or artistic ability, can explore their emotions, communicate without words, and embark on a journey of personal growth. The Art Room is intended to empower students to navigate life's challenges, promote mental wellbeing, and cultivate a sense of community and connection.

UVA Students can drop in to visit the Art Room whenever Student Health and Wellness is open for business, except during scheduled class sessions.

Guiding Principles

  • Feel free to get messy, just remember to leave the space as it was found.
  • Respect each other’s space and creations.
  • When seeking inspiration, consult the creativity binder. Take a look at some prompts or take a coloring page to use.
  • This space is for art and creative focus, please find another comfortable spot in the building for studying.
  • Feel free to refresh with water, please no other food or drink in the Art Room.
  • Limit distractions, take this time to disconnect from technology.

Looking for Inspiration?

We have inspiration in the Art Room!

  • Consult the Art Binder. In the Art Binder, you'll find prompts, stencils, and templates to get your creative juices going. We also provide many materials for you to use in the Art Room.
  • Pay it forward. Leave a positive message to a fellow student to receive after their CAPS appointment. Look for the Worry Worms prompt on the counter and in the Art Binder.
  • Add to our community art. Community art will switch monthly and students are welcome to engage with the project throughout the month.

Upcoming Classes

Journaling with Art Materials, Exploring the "Woven Word"

This workshop is inspired by the beautiful body of work by Chicago based artist Bryana Bibbs, The Journal series, collections of woven textiles created as journal entries in a series completed throughout the years since 2020. Bibbs has also created a weaving workshop for survivors of domestic violence.

Working in small form “looms” participants will create a journal entry to capture a feeling. Student will learn to explore expression in a new way, using the senses rather than concrete tools like writing, though writing may make it’s way into your piece if you choose.

Participants will be offered a range of materials and will be encouraged to think of their current mood or feeling and let that mood or feeling guide the selection of materials. Each participant will learn the art of basic weaving on a cardboard loom and will experience a new way of expressing themselves.
