In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the University of Virginia offers an array of individualized accommodations and services to qualified students with disabilities. Reasonable accommodations are determined using an interactive process between the student and SDAC staff. If you have questions or would like to find out more
information, please feel free to contact SDAC.
- How does SDAC determine reasonable accommodations?
-
Ensuring that accommodations provide effective access, SDAC uses a combination of things to determine a student's eligibility for services and reasonable accommodations on a case-by-case and course-by-course basis. This includes but is not limited to a student’s:
- Submission of an application
- Documentation
- Participation in the interactive process with an Advisor
- Insight from relevant faculty or University staff, when applicable
- Clarification from treating providers, when applicable
A reasonable accommodation is one that is:
- Necessary to ensure a student’s equal opportunity to benefit from institutional offerings as their peers without disabilities
- Necessary to ensure that the campus environment, academic requirements, and/or technical standards do not have a discriminating effect on the basis of disability
- Logically connected to the functional impact of a student’s disability in academics and/or the campus environment
- Effective in removing an identified institutional barrier to access
A reasonable accommodation must not:
- Constitute a substantial change/alteration to an essential element of a curriculum/program or to the manner in which a service is provided
- Pose an undue hardship to the University
- Result in a risk to the health or safety of others
