Bio

Susie Bruce, M.Ed., joined the Division of Student Affairs in July 2000 and serves as the Gordie Center Director.

Her role focuses on partnering with students and staff to lead the University’s hazing prevention efforts and the Gordie Center’s national hazing and alcohol overdose prevention and education campaigns. Ms. Bruce’s areas of expertise focus on health promotion with emerging adults, particularly through peer education, curriculum infusion, bystander intervention, and the social norms approach.

Ms. Bruce is also Director of the annual APPLE Training Institutes: the leading national strategic training program for substance misuse prevention and health promotion for student-athletes and athletics departments and a Faculty Affiliate of Youth-Nex: The UVA Center to Promote Effective Youth Development.

Ms. Bruce earned a BA in English and an M.Ed. in Counselor Education with a specialization in student affairs practice in higher education, both from the University of Virginia. Prior to returning to UVA, she managed health promotion efforts at James Madison University, the University of North Carolina – Greensboro, and Longwood University.
