The recent storming of the US Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, shocked and disturbed our community, our nation, and the world. UVA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) condemns the ongoing racism that permeates our society; honors the myriad of emotions triggered by this incident; and, supports the well-being of every student at UVA. CAPS recognizes the vicarious trauma that may be felt by members of our community and in particular, Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQ+, Jewish, Muslim, undocumented, and other minoritized individuals. This recent incident in conjunction with the ongoing global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and multiple occurrences of racial unrest have exacerbated a departure from our sense of safety and normalcy. CAPS encourages the resilience of those affected and the camaraderie exhibited by the UVA community in support of one another.
