Monkeypox

What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a rare contagious rash illness caused by the monkeypox virus. The virus is in the same family of viruses as the virus that causes smallpox. Monkeypox causes milder illness than smallpox, but some symptoms can be severe. The monkeypox virus can spread from animals to people and from person to person.

In 2022, a monkeypox outbreak began. There are cases in many countries or areas where this infection is not usually found, including in the U.S. and in Virginia.

I am at high risk of exposure to Monkeypox, how can I get a vaccine to prevent infection?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is working with the Virginia Department of Health to provide vaccines to those most in need while supply is limited.  As the Blue Ridge Health District (BRHD), our local health district, receives vaccine shipments, they will offer vaccinations to those at higher risk of exposure or serious illness.

To assist in their planning, BRHD is using this survey to gather contact information for people at high risk of exposure who are interested in getting vaccinated. You are not guaranteed a vaccine by filling out this form. However, you will be added to the BRHD list to potentially receive a vaccine in the future depending on your risk factors and the available supply. This survey is HIPAA compliant, meaning your health information will be protected. If you need assistance filling out this form, or have edits after submission, please contact BRHD at 434-591-1960 (M-F 8AM-4:30PM). Please only complete this survey once.
