COVID-19 Assess and/or Test—How Does It All Work?

When you call us for care or testing related to COVID-19, first we’ll ask if you’ve been exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19, or if you have symptoms of COVID-19. In both cases, we will:

  • Ask you to live separately from others for the recommended time frame.  Check out our “Coping with Quarantine and Isolation Guide” for some tips and resources.
  • Coordinate with the Dean on Call if you live on Grounds and need University quarantine or isolation housing
  • Further instruct on if you need a COVID-19 test and how to get one, if needed.

EXPOSURE TO COVID-19: We will help you determine if your exposure meets the definition of close contact.  The health department may also call you, and will make the final determination. In the meantime, we will provide advice on quarantine and recommend testing for people who meet the definition of close contact.  For all others, we will reinforce preventative measures.

SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19: If you have symptoms of COVID-19, we will determine the severity and advise accordingly. For mild symptoms, we’ll schedule you for a COVID-19 test at SHW (usually within 48 hours). For moderate to severe symptoms, we’ll ask you to come in for an in-person appointment and a COVID-19 test.

Ok, I Have a Positive COVID-19 Test—What’s Next?

First, we want to get you on the road to recovery. Your health and well-being are the most important thing! Whether your positive test came from Let’s Get Checked, a UVA Health test, or from a local testing site, here’s what to expect:

  • If you have symptoms, you will need to isolate at least 10 days since you first tested positive AND 24 hours with no fever without using fever-reducing medicine AND other symptoms have improved.
  • If you do not have symptoms, you will need to isolate at least 10 days since your  positive test.
  • If you live in on-Grounds housing, we’ll coordinate with the Dean on Call to get you set up with University isolation housing—or you may choose to go home, if safe to do so.
  • If you live off-Grounds, you will need to isolate in your off-Grounds housing or you may choose to go home, if safe to do so.  Your housemate(s) will need to begin to quarantine immediately. Here is a resource to help you and your housemate(s) manage your isolation.
  • We’ll check in with you to see how you’re feeling. Check out our “Coping with Quarantine and Isolation Guide” for some tips and resources.

A contact tracer with the local health department will also give you a call. It’s really important you talk with them and answer any questions they may have. Their job is to help keep our community healthy and safe, and you play a key part in that! Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
