Hoo needs help
Hoo Needs Help is a centralized emergency financial assistance program that exists to support students who need assistance with unexpected, unforeseen, and unavoidable emergency expenses. These may be expenses related to situations such as accidents, illness, theft, natural disasters, and food or housing insecurity.
Please note: This fund is not a scholarship and is intended to be an emergency resource when other options have been exhausted. If you need funds quickly, please refer to the additional and alternative resources at the bottom of this page.
Eligibility
All degree-seeking, enrolled students are eligible to apply, regardless of documentation or academic status.
- For most requests, students will be required to utilize any available need-based financial aid, including loans, before emergency financial assistance is available.
- During periods of no enrollment (between terms) and J-term, emergency loans will be the only available form of support.
- Emergency assistance will be very limited during summer sessions. Students must be enrolled in courses for credit to be eligible for emergency financial assistance.
Additional grant funding awarded to you through your student account is tax reportable if it is intended for non-qualified expenses (i.e. anything other than tuition, fees, books, and supplies). This funding is reported on your annual 1098-T form (box 5), which you can use to help you file your taxes each year. For specific questions about your personal tax situation, you will need to consult with a tax professional, as UVA cannot provide personal tax advice. Here’s some additional 1098-T information.

Prioritization and Needs Assessment
Due to limited funds and desire for equitable awarding, we prioritize awarding to students who:
- Are experiencing food insecurity, housing insecurity, and/or are otherwise unable to have their basic needs met
- Have not received any campus or department emergency grants, and have limited or no support from family/guardians, savings or assets
- Have significant loan debt history or have met the average loan borrowing amount for students of their year
Note that we recognize some students are not eligible for federal financial aid through the FAFSA and we assess accordingly.
