Why participate in BASICS?
You will receive:
- Personalized feedback about alcohol, juuling, marijuana, or other drug use, and help compare your substance use to other UVA students.
- An opportunity to explore your strengths, motivations, and possible goals.
- A “check-up” on your drinking. You decide what’s going well, what’s not working, and what you want to do.
Is BASICS right for me?
If you’re a UVA college student who uses any type of substance…then yes!
BASICS is appropriate for any student, whether you are concerned about your use or you are just curious about learning how your use compares to others.
What are other students saying about BASICS?
"It was confidential, helpful, and [the facilitator] truly cared about me and my situation."
"I appreciate the honest feedback and the opportunity to talk to someone else about how to make constructive changes in the future."
Do I need a referral to BASICS?
No. While your healthcare provider or someone in the campus community might refer you to BASICS, anyone can complete BASICS!
What can I expect when I register for BASICS?
BASICS involves a 20 minute online survey and a one-hour, one-on-one meeting with a facilitator. BASICS is not therapy or substance abuse treatment.
After you register, simply check your email and complete the confidential online survey from SDSU eCHECKUP TO GO. Complete the survey related to the substance you’d like to discuss.
At the end of the survey, you’ll be able to schedule your confidential, non-judgmental meeting with a BASICS facilitator.
It is strongly recommended to schedule your appointment within three weeks of completing the survey.
How do I schedule a BASICS appointment?
BASICS sessions are by appointment only. Click on “REGISTER” and you will be emailed a survey. On the last page of the survey, you will be given a link to schedule an online appointment to discuss your results with a BASICS facilitator.
Where do I go for my appointment?
Meetings are held in the Office of Health Promotion (lower level of the Elson Student Health and Wellness Center). Limited parking is available behind Student Health and Wellness.
How much does BASICS cost?
BASICS is free.
Students who are sanctioned by the University Judiciary Committee must pay a recovery charge of $50 which is billed to the student’s SIS account.
There is a $25 cancellation charge billed to the student’s SIS account if a student misses, cancels, or re-schedules an appointment without at least 24 hour notice.
What if I am mandated to complete BASICS?
The BASICS program treats all students with respect and confidentiality.
If you wish to have confirmation of your completion of the program emailed to a referral source, you will need to complete a consent form at the time of your meeting. This is not required and completely up to you.
Will my information be shared with anyone if I come to BASICS?
All information within the BASICS session is kept confidential between the student and the facilitator, unless requested otherwise by the student. However, if a student indicates an intention to harm themselves or others, or a court order is issued, information may be disclosed as required by federal, state or local law.
Does BASICS work?
The short answer is… yes! The BASICS program is one of the most effective evidence-based substance education interventions with college students. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized BASICS as an evidence-based model program.
