Pre-Participation Athletic Physicals
Pre-participation athletic physicals are offered by appointment in the Medical Services clinic. This physical is required by the athletic department for all students who wish to try-out for collegiate teams. It is also recommended for students who plan to participate in club or intramural sports or embark on a new athletic activity or program. At your visit, a physician will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and make recommendations for your athletic participation. If you wish to have the sickle cell test, this will be done at your appointment.
Required Steps
The pre-participation athletic physical is comprised of three required steps:
- Review of the NCAA Sickle Cell Trait Fact Sheet for Student Athletes.
- PLEASE NOTE: Due to new guidelines set in place by the NCAA and UVA, ALL students trying out for Division 1 and specified club teams in the 2022-2023 calendar year and beyond are required to be screened for sickle cell trait. If you have prior documentation of this test being done (such as for newborn testing), please bring those results to your athletic physical appointment. Otherwise we will order lab testing at the time of the visit.
2. Schedule your appointment by calling the Medical Services reception desk at (434) 982-3915.
3. Complete the required Athletic Health History form (located in the HealthyHoos patient portal) before your appointment:
- View upcoming appointments and complete the associated form.
- If the form is not completed prior to your visit, your appointment may be cancelled and you will need to reschedule.
Cost
There is no charge for the pre-participation athletic physical. However, there is a fee for any necessary additional services, such as lab tests, immunizations, EKG, etc.

- The physician may also recommend referral to a specialist for further evaluation. Please contact your insurance provider to discuss coverage for these services.
